This summer I eventually managed to visit the classic #pseudotachylite outcrop on the beach south of Greian Head, (Ceann Aird Ghrein), Isle of Barra, Scotland. #Geology

At the age in this photo I asked a teacher how I could work for NASA. He laughed. He knew my parents never graduated high school. It’s been a difficult road but at 38 my biggest dream has come true. I start at NASA later this year after graduating with my PhD in astrophysics.

Tight to isoclinal #FridayFold in an Archaean layered intrusion at Cnoca Breac, on the west coast of South Uist. Considered to be some of the oldest rocks in the Outer Hebrides at > 2900 Ma the compositional layering is still distinguishable despite strong Laxfordian reworking

Diorite on Mars? Somewhat vague description of the mineralogy ("pyroxene and feldspar"), but if it is intermediate in composition, it almost certainly represents reprocessing of older basaltic crust🧐 jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-per…

Brought back some #IgneousGin A suitable souvenir to remind me of our stay in the middle of #Ardnamurchan Paleocene intrusion centre #3. Our cabin was next to the distillery and was surrounded by ring intrusions giving the appearance of a caldera.

A pair of shear zones cutting across the complicated fabric in garnetiferous metasediments belonging to the Harris Granulite Belt. I keep spotting new things on the larger outcrop photo 🤔but luckily it is only a 90 minutes drive to go back #ShearZones #Granulites #OuterHebrides

#FridayFold seen in a new road cutting near Stornoway. #Archaean Lewisian gneiss is cut by mafic #OuterHebrides dyke. Both are then folded during the #Laxfordian. Cross cutting of the gneissic foliation can be seen in the core of the fold, whilst the limbs are concordant

Attenuation of the limbs in these folds has left some of the fold hinges essentially floating. #Laxfordian folding on the north west coast of the #IsleofLewis #TectonicTuesday #Geology #Lewisian #Folding
