Peter Brook’s skies were an integral part of his work, often determining the mood of a painting, in ‘Cold Dawn - At 1200 ft A.S.L.’ the choice of colours portraying perfectly the feel of daybreak on high ground in winter, the sheep sheltering by the wall adding to the atmosphere.

Peter Brook’s legendary long titles became almost an art form in their own right in some of his later work, in ‘Pennine Cottages Where Weavers Once Was - As They Say Round Here’ extending above the fence and up the side the painting, with Shep getting his own special mention too.

A breezy Monday always brings to mind one of Peter Brook’s most whimsical works, ‘Blowing in the Wind - With a Dog Called Bob and a Cat Called Dylan - PTO’. Typical of his sense of humour, he also added ‘It’s Shep Really! He’s only Acting!’ to the back of the original painting.

Much of Peter Brook’s work focusses on the light at either end of the day. In ‘Out Early - Walking through a Misty Pennine Landscape’ the sun struggles to break through, turning the sky a dusky pink, interrupted only by the tiny whisp of white smoke from the farmhouse chimney.

After a visit to Swaledale in April 2007 Peter Brook produced a distinctive body of work inspired by the area together with a book featuring ‘Walking in the Dales with a Very Disappointed Dog’ on the front cover. (The painting is for sale in Contemporary Six’s Spring Exhibition)

‘Pennine Way - Evening Light’ is Peter Brook’s portrayal of the iconic long distance footpath established 60 years ago yesterday. Typically, he depicts one of the less spectacular stretches, relying on a trademark sky to bring the painting to life. (Sold Wilson55 Auctioneers & Valuers in 2020)

A different sort of post for today, prompted by this morning’s London Marathon. Peter Brook (pictured) was a keen and accomplished runner, training in the Pennines with the Holmfirth Harriers on Sunday mornings and discovering places which became the subjects of future paintings.

Today we are remembering the 56 & all those affected. 40 years on and still very raw. Thank you to the unknown man who pulled me over the Paddock wall. I never got the chance to say thank you. Because of you I now have 2 lovely children and 2 fantastic grandkids. #bcafc #bantams
