Interesting to hear Starmer talk about 'respect' or 'disrespect' by the state in his speech today. Our More in Common work with UCL Policy Lab found that respect for ordinary people was the attribute people most thought important in a political leader.

Very supportive of spending £2.5bn on young people to help prepare them for future success.

I’d do it by abolishing the two-child limit so hundreds of thousands of kids don’t go to school hungry.

Britain has the highest rate of homelessness in the developed world, by some margin. Daniel Hewitt and ITV News have provided an important public service shining a light on what that means in human terms. 👏

We're sure you've heard, a general election has been called!

📋 We want all political parties to commit to building a future where no one needs a food bank, so we've pulled together a to do list for the next government.

Still getting my head around the idea that 4 July is in the second half of the year.

Having trained in the civil service I see July as “the spring” (a period that ends some time in October).

📢 will be on July 4th

We live in a country where almost four million people have experienced destitution in a single year, a million of them children.

We need to hear plans to urgently tackle this hardship from every political party.

⬇️ powerful call from RCGP The Health Foundation & others for funding reform to recognise the impact of poverty on GP services

🤝But we also need to take the pressure off GPs by reducing poverty in the first place - with good jobs, affordable homes and a stronger social security system.

The assault on the social security system over recent years represents the dismantling of vital national infrastructure.

Millions of people, and public services like the NHS, are paying the price. In different ways, we all are.

Gordon Brown: 'I don’t think people have woken up to the scale of poverty affecting children. I did not think we’d be back to a time where you’ve got bedrooms without beds, people who can’t afford soap, shampoo, toothpaste, cleaning materials'.

Too bloody right. Time to wake up.

I was asked at a conference yesterday why there isn’t more public attention on the fact that life expectancy in the UK is actually falling for some groups, given how extraordinary that is.

I said I didn’t know. What’s the answer?

A staggering 1 in every 200 families is homeless in the UK Financial Times. We will never address mental health, school learning and much else until we tackle this foundational issue creating unbearable instability for so many families

'We should never give up our sense of collective societal agency.'

Key message on the link between the building blocks of health and how these relate to poverty and public health.

People need decent homes, good jobs and access to social security.

This is a brilliant, fascinating piece. If you feel downbeat about how stuck things feel sometimes, read this and remind yourself that alternative approaches are available!

Some people have responded to that chart with 'That can’t be right', or 'We can’t be worse than America'.

I’m afraid the chart is right. 15 years ago the UK’s record on homelessness *was* not too dissimilar to other developed countries, but things have rapidly deteriorated.

‘A society free from poverty is an ethical mission.’

Poverty means facing insecurity, discrimination, being unable to play a full part in society.
