This is your pre-Paralympics reminder that: Paralympians don’t have special needs. Paralympians aren’t handicapped. Paralympians aren’t differently abled. They’re disabled. It’s not a dirty word.

Access, civil rights, human rights and justice for disabled people are not debatable issues.

Nobody will remember: Your salary. Your job title. How "busy" you were. But they will remember: That you were a lovely person who added alt text to your social media posts.

An ableist society has created the “special needs” of disabled people by ignoring our human needs and erecting barriers that exclude, devalue and dehumanize disabled people.

Access for disabled people is not an extra. Accommodation of disabled people is not an extra. Civil rights, human rights and justice for disabled people are not an extra. Ableism frames equity for disabled people as an extra. It is not.

Too often, inaccessibility for disabled people has been viewed as something that disabled people have to overturn rather than a wrong committed by society, government and the private sector that must be fixed by those who exclude.
