Gross motor skills are movements related to large muscles such as legs, arms, and trunk. As they grow, your little one will work their motor skills daily in their routine. Infants and toddlers may need extra stimulation for their motor skills. #motorskills

During the day, newborn babies move through states of alertness. Active Alert means baby’s eyes are open & they’re moving around. They may seem uncomfortable, fussy & they may be tired or hungry. This is not the best time to play, but you can soothe baby in this state.

During the day, newborn babies move through states of alertness. Drowsy State occurs when baby is waking up from sleep. Their eyes may even be closed & it looks like they could go back to sleep. Don’t play with baby in the drowsy state, they need sleep and won’t be engaged.

During the day, newborn babies move through states of alertness. In the Quiet Alert state, baby is quiet and calm, with eyes wide open. They enjoy being cuddled and seem to hear and see what is happening around them. This is the best time to play with a newborn baby!

Matches & mismatches in the NICU. Matches occur when you give baby what they need to calm down. Mismatches occur when you aren't giving baby exactly what they need IN THAT MOMENT. These occur far more often than matches, and this is normal, especially since baby can't talk yet.
