The City of Edmonton’s left hand is lobbying Ottawa for affordable housing dollars. Its right hand just kicked Tracey Kushniruk out of the most affordable place she’s ever found. edmontonjournal.com/opinion/column… #yegcc

But the bigger question is - why so much red tape for neighbourhood groups? Today’s setup means the best community leagues are hamstrung; the worst leagues — those negative, insular boards with no turnover — have no incentive to get better. #yegcc #efcl edmontonjournal.com/opinion/column…

Great volunteers burn out. Leagues get grants whether they include new residents or not. They’re prohibited from renting or including any for-profit. Fortunately, their legal operating agreement with the city expires in 2021. This is just the time to change it. #yegcc #yeg

“It feels like everything around us puts us in a box. We can’t exit out at all. We can’t move,” - Liz Kalisvaart, Fraser CL. They'd like to advertise on main roads, but that means temp signs, and only 8 per year. Forced to chose between craft sale and seniors tea. #yegcc

But #yegcc used to know how to support community, nurture new leaders and build something lasting. Arts On The Ave is a great example, started in 2005. Unfortunately, its city staffer retired last year in frustration. The current city work culture is too prescriptive and limiting

But there's movement, a chance to rethink and change. @MichaelWalters is hoping to get the ball rolling before this summer. It need a critical rethink. Edmonton residents are capable of more than this city gives them credit for. #yegcc edmontonjournal.com/opinion/column…

I went to Parkview from K-9, my kids go to the same school. The community league has always been a major part the school, from bbq’s to using the ice rinks in the winter. The live-in suite was something that has always been a thing for as far back as I can remember. So silly.

@DeakMusings Elise Stolte I also wanted to see her stay in. When I was first made aware of it, I shared that feedback with the team working on it. Then I received an update that she had relocated to another home in the community because of the City. So now the goal is to fix the policy that is restricting

@DeakMusings Elise Stolte leagues from using their spaces creatively. Assuming there is general support by community residents, a league should be allowed to have a live-in caretaker. That makes a lot of sense and would help community volunteers focus on delivering programs/services.
