Did you know that the confluence of the Clear Fork & West Fork, located at Panther Island Pavilion, creates a major flood risk during high river flows? The roughly 90-degree turn just downstream of the confluence slows the water down, causing the need for extra flood protection.

The Central City Flood Control Project addresses FW’s flood risks resulting from population growth; FW has tripled in size since the current levee system was built in 1960. This federal project will return flood protection to over 2,400 acres of established FW neighborhoods.

When USACE built the existing levee system in FW, a section of the Trinity River was cut off leaving behind a dry oxbow, harming the terrestrial & aquatic habitat. The valley storage work in the park has restored the natural habitat that once existed in the Riverside Oxbow area.
