Hello there! It seems that you’ve found my first Tweet. Anyway, I made this account to (hopefully) document the progress of my PhD in Earth Sciences, connect with like-minded people, spread my love of rocks, science, art, etc., and share random tidbits from my life. Enjoy!

It was great to meet the other members of the CambridgeESS&C-CLEAR DTP* cohort on Thursday and Friday this week. We were treated to tours of the Botanic Gardens and Madingley Hall (see pictures), and a lovely formal dinner! *Where the money (and training sessions, etc.) comes from!

I'm happy to now be a matriculated postgraduate member of Corpus Christi. The day involved signing an old book, tours of the libraries and some very tasty cake! Thanks to George Garnett for the picture of me.

This week, I've been settling into the Cambridge Earth Sciences department – it's gone by rather quickly, but it's been fun meeting my fellow grad students, demonstrating in a practical and getting my own office! A particular highlight was a tour of the new The Sedgwick Museum collections store:

Measuring methane and CO₂ production in modern East Anglian sediments with the Part III Environmental Geochemists. Highlights included pulling cores out of sulphidic salt-marsh ponds, digging holes in a farm, and wondering why our Picarro was reading a δ¹³C of −500‰!

Thanks to Tim, Dan and the team Earth and Environment at Leeds for giving me the opportunity to help with the analysis of this earthquake data back in 2020. I'd encourage anyone interested in earthquakes from deforming subducted slabs to read our paper!

Biggest achievement of my PhD so far…? I think it has to be coming 2nd in the #GGRiP pub quiz last night! Team “Fractional Quiztallisation” (the igneous petrologists were responsible for that one) absolutely smashed it @GeochemGroup
