Shuiwang Ji Yes! They have been used a lot in brain mapping - in 1996 we used them to register (spherically parameterized) cortical surfaces as you can expand any square-integrable function on the cortex in spherical harmonics Y_ℓm(θ,ϕ), even a smooth change of coordinates that matches
