The Penn State Forester worked overtime last week to clear Univ. forest roads of storm-damaged trees to secure access through the Stone Valley Forest for trout anglers on Saturday.

FOR228 Chainsaw Safety, Maintenance, and Operation in Forest Management trees felled by the students, bucked for maximum profit by the PSU Forester, and hauled to a local sawmill. The tri-axle load was a mix of logs suitable for railroad/bridge ties, pallet, and grade quality.

Fifty PS Navy ROTC Marines and Midshipmen conducted field training exercises in the Stone Valley Forest. April 6, the PS Air Force ROTC will be conducting training exercises in the Stone Valley Forest. The training will occur in the Shaver Creek valley south of Lake Perez.

PSU Red Rose Road in the Stone Valley Forest is closed at Discovery Road and also closed at Scare Pond Road due to flooding. Access to the SCEC is via Red Rose Road from Charter Oak Road and access to the SVRA is via Red Rose Road from SR26 or Scare Pond Road via SR26.

The PSU Forestland Mgmt. Office recently partnered with the Grounds Maintenance tree surgeons to eliminate a number of hazardous trees in the Stone Valley Forest. Unfortunately, the small quantity of trees will be processed into a renewable winter heat source for a nearby home.

The PSU Stone Valley Forest seasonally open roads are closed to vehicle traffic for the remainder of winter. Hike, bike or ski in access is still permissible. The roads will reopen to vehicles in mid-April. Access requests can be directed to Kevin Cook, [email protected].
