I wish more people understood this. Kids who feel safe don't carry guns. Kids who have guns are carrying guns because they are scared of something and usually it's something pretty real. Incarcerating teenagers actually worsens the underlying problem.

(1 of 2): The San Diego Police Department disproportionately targets Black people as gang members at a higher rate than White people. Hear firsthand from a resident who faced profiling & discrimination at a young age and the impacts that experience has had in his adulthood. Pillars of the Community

If you've heard me say that gang laws create a separate, vastly worse legal apparatus for people of color, this is what I mean.

The PAB's reviewing San Diego Police Department's wiretapping bugs by Callyo (Apr 10 mtg). When asked why they don't get a warrant, PD said recordings are of places 'detectives have a right to be.' Other places require warrants for such intrusive tech tho: bostonglobe.com/2023/10/26/opi…

Yesterday, San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee approved continued use of Body Worn Cameras by SDPD. They did not discuss the Privacy Advisory Board's recommended modifications to PD's 5-page use policy, except to say that the order of review 1/6

NEW: Cellebrite asks law enforcement customers to keep their use of the phone hacking tech 'hush hush,' according to leaked video.

The company especially doesn't want cops to talk about it in court to protect trade secrets and avoid helping criminals.

Reading that 3 out of 4 people arrested by the LAPD between 2019-2022 were Black or Latino is a startling but not surprising statistic. These numbers do not accurately reflect who our community is. These are our friends and our family. This targeting is systemic racism.
