Poincaré left a trail of breadcrumbs in nonlinear dynamics: Why are homoclinic orbits so essential for chaos? I want to come at this from an angle you don't usually see -- one which shows just how universal homoclinic chaos really is, in the simplest possible way.

Last month observed well below average temperatures around the Antarctic, while all other latitude bands continued to see anomalous warmth.

[Plot shows zonal-mean surface air temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance). Data: GISTEMPv4 (1951-1980)]

The decline to the seasonal minimum of sea ice extent continues. This year is the 2nd lowest on record (behind just last year).

More graphs: zacklabe.com/antarctic-sea-…. Data from National Snow and Ice Data Center.

George Green is the Ramanujan of physics. Born to a miller in Nottingham, Green himself took up the trade and was largely self-educated. At 35, he rented out his mill and penned 'An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism.'

New Paper by Dr Dyballa with Steve Zucker and Mike Stryker shows that although both V1 units and ConvNet ResNet50 units can have orientation tuning they have completely different internal architectures and is a case of artificial convergent evolution.

Happy to share our latest paper in mBio! We used cryo-electron tomography to study the structure of the poxvirus core in intact virions. Poxvirus include smallpox, monkeypox and vaccine candidates (MVA, vaccinia)

If you want to know why/how light waves 'slow down' in materials with higher refractive index, I highly recommend this video. Here, Grant did a fantastic job at breaking down the concepts into understandable bits for the viewer and included animations too!
