Jacob Lawrence’s birthday is on September 7. In 1982 the artist was commissioned to create 8 paintings to accompany John Hersey’s “Hiroshima,” a book from 1946 documenting six survivors of the first atomic bomb attack. — Jacob Lawrence, “Hiroshima,” 1983. 2013.46.1a,b
