BarcaFutbol The key to his success, however, is proper profiling.
Barcelona are built to play a certain way with the types of players they have & their respective strengths. As long as Flick doesn't force them to be something they are not, he'll be fine.
He will suffer. But he'll be fine.
BarcaFutbol Bayern are also relentless and there's no doubt Flick was more about being the protagonist in attack than necessarily using pragmatism to win games.
Once they were settled comfortably in the final third, Bayern would sustain pressure in a 3-2-5 or a 2-3-5 structure.
BarcaFutbol Above we see:
— back 3
— pivot dropping to progress
— RB in a supportive distributor role
— 10 roaming/linking up
— fast-paced access to the wide areas.
Overall a great representation of Flick's philosophy, founded on great individual quality & instructive coaching.
BarcaFutbol It could be challenging for Flick to perfectly replicate the formula at Barcelona but with his stronger coaching fundamentals & harsher instructive methodology, one would hope for a step forward nonetheless.
Below is a good sequence that shows us these principles in play.
BarcaFutbol Bayern were quick to exploit & access the space, especially if it was on the flanks.
Under Flick, they averaged ~15 crosses per game from open play, similar to Xavi in 2023/24.
Both focus on the wings with wide triangles & especially the overload to isolate strategy.
BarcaFutbol Of course, there are several avenues they looked to explore & several patterns they deployed.
Some general differences were visible in who was tasked with progression:
If it was the pivot, progression was more systematic. 🔄
If it were the CBs, progression was more vertical. ↗
BarcaFutbol One of the most common tactical movements was the creation of the back three.
Generally, Bayern would build attacks/create superiorities in a 3-1 or a 3-2 structure, with:
— a pivot deep in the backline
OR
— keeping the right-back as the third centre-back in the first phase
BarcaFutbol Bayern under his command were quick, intense & direct but also dominating and technical.
Partly, this is due to the overwhelming individual quality he had at his disposal but also due to the clarity of his instructions.
Below, we can see some of their patterns. 👇
BarcaFutbol Flick's Bayern are akin to Xavi's Barcelona in several aspects:
— Wants to control games
— Focus on keeping the ball/possession
— Not afraid to identify & quickly exploit space
Flick himself describes it as an 'active style in all positions and all times.'
He's right, too. 👍
