The Orion girls just finished 10th among 29 teams in the 3200-meter relay at the Class 1A state meet in Charleston. Next up: Olivia Thomsen in the 800 about 4 p.m. and the 1600 about 5 p.m.

Orion's Olivia Thomsen finished 11th among 27 girls in the 800-meter run at the Class 1A state track and field meet in Charleston. Her time was 2:26.75. She will be on the track again about 5 p.m. for the 1600 run.

Orion leads Hall 13-7 in varsity football at Spring Valley. Hall scored on 4-yd run at 5:59 in first quarter. Orion‘s Kratzberg scored on 40-plus pick sixth early in second quarter. Murdock kick good. With 2:17 to go in first half, Kratzberg scored on 17-yard run. Kick blocked.

Following COVID-19 protocols, Mercer County has withdrawn from its own golf invitational on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Valley View. The tournament will still go on, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Also, MerCo has cancelled volleyball with Orion on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

Orion hosts Erie-Prophetstown in Homecoming football at 1 p.m. Please bring cash for a memorial fund for Rock Falls senior football player Brock Parker at the concession stand. He’s the son of Kevin Parker, who has connections to Orion and P-town. Brock died earlier this week.

Vaughn Bernhardt is representing Orion in the Class 1A boys state golf tournament at Prairie Vista in Bloomington this morning. Temperature 66 as he tees off at 10:18, predicted high temp in mid-70s, slight chance of rain (15 percent).

1:30 p.m. Orion’s Vaughn Bernhardt was 1-over on each of the fourth, fifth and sixth holes, making him +4 through the first seven holes. So far he has parred the second, third and seventh holes. The seventh is a par five, 543 yard hole.

3:15 p.m. Vaughn Bernhardt is 11 over at the boys state golf tournament in Bloomington. His 67 total includes +1 on the 8th, par on the 9th, +1 on the 10th, par on the 11th, +1 on the 13th and par on the fourth. He was +4 on the 171-yard 12th.

5 p.m. Charger Vaughn Bernhardt finishes the first day of the state tournament with a +13 total of 85 (41 out, 44 in) for the 6432-yard Prairie Vista course in Bloomington. He parred the 15th, 16th and 18th, and he was +2 over on the 17th.
