Yesterday Grandma Anneliese discovered her mother's #ww1-diary. She completely forgot about it even though she transcribed it in 1981. The diary begins with the July Crisis & ends in feb 1915. My great grandmother was from East Prussia and witnessed warfare on the eastern front.

This is my maternal great grandmother Erna Merkisch. She kept a diary during the first months of #WW1 that I recently discovered. At this point I'm busy gathering information on all family members mentioned in the diary & on former East Prussia. #uromaskrieg

Looking for medal experts: This is my great great grandfather Otto Merkisch (1851-1937). I think he's decorated with the Merit Cross for War Aid & the Prussian Order of the Crown (III. class). Anyone that knows a thing or two about medals? Help is needed, thanks! #uromaskrieg

Here Charles de Gaulle was kept pow in 1918. The future general & President of France was captured by the germans during the Battle of Verdun & later brought to the Wülzburg, a fortress of the Renaissance-age in Bavaria. De Gaulle tried to escape five times but always failed.

Grandpa Franz never felt the need to come back to the the french battlegrounds. He once overflew the Champagne area with a Lufthansa plane on his way to Canada in the 60s. He said he was glad to (kind of) revisit France with his wife and not with his rifle.
