I make jokes about Cal sports. Said jokes offer no guarantee of amusement.

Debating if I want to see this team pound the ball inside more, or if it’s better to embrace their likely long term identity as a high volume 3 point dependent team

42-26 Cal WBB lead at half. A big 3 point shooting disparity explains some of the margin, but Cal has been physically dominant against a short-handed St. Mary's in the way that you would hope and expect. Cal's been able to get 11 players onto the floor including 4 freshmen

Hadn’t really thought about this, but where you spend your NIL money matters and Cal maybe not very efficient this year (without knowing who makes how much)

Cal WBB first game takeaways: Good: 3 point shooting generally, Twidale specifically. Sustainable? Ackerman looking like an efficient back up 4 Concerning: St. Mary's shoots 21-45 on their 2s, would like to see stronger interior defense against this level of opposition

+10 shot equivalents is nice to see, and I'd say that CSUB may be shooting a little better than their shot quality. Blacksher the standout for me. Encouraging so far.

20 minutes of Ben Braun warning me about how Cal was in imminent danger of a CSUB comeback in a game that was not once in any meaningful doubt

-3 shot equivalents in a sleep, sloppy 2nd half. Not exactly thrilled with how Cal closed the game, but it was entirely acceptable as a first game with the entire rotation turned over
