And we're off for heat 4 of 4 of the Annual Year 5 HFL Education Maths challenge! As it's our final session we're going to be sharing some of our favourite questions. We've been so pleased with the feedback so far - the perplexing puzzles really have been a hit! Good luck all!

Round 1 of the fourth & final heat of the HFL Education Year 5 Challenge is complete! Here is one of the questions. How would you and your pupils get on? How could you work as a team of four to solve this within the three minute time limit? A great one to try with a UKS2 class!

Round 2 is our estimation round! This question requires pupils to use a number of different steps to make their estimate. How would you & your pupils tackle this question? Well done to the hundreds of pupils who tackled this as part of this year’s 2025 HFL Year 5 maths challenge!

And with that, the final heat is over! The final round contained another mix of questions from across the maths curriculum. With huge thanks as ever to the adults who support the pupils to have the opportunity to take part in this challenge. It's one of our annual highlights!

We all know how beneficial beadstrings are for younger pupils in maths to help them with addition, subtraction, number bonds etc. This blog is a great reminder that 0-100 beadstrings are also essential manipulatives for older pupils for developing concrete understanding of FDP
