Bumped into our legendary Em. Prof. David Black today, who is 86 and still coming around UNSW Chemical Society twice a week to read and write chemistry. What a coincidence as we were talking about his huge impact on #ozchem and IUPAC yesterday.

Started my June-August sabbatical in Giessen, great hospitality by Prof Peter Schreiner and PRS-Group, great foods, inspiring discussions on chemistry and history of Universität Gießen with Liebig/Röntgen and later on Seebach/Enders. This was where "umpolung chemistry" started.

Work hard and play hard in the first week of my sabbatical at PRS-Group, great fun at beer o’clock with the Schreiner group members and Prof David Nicewicz Nicewicz Lab. Great discussion with Prof Hermann Wegner Wegner Labs

Super interesting discussion with Prof Siegfried (Siggy) Schindler Universität Gießen on superoxido copper complexes and "green" oxygenation. Siggy has a license to blow things up, and is very fond of Vietnamese foods. #ozchem on #sabbatical

It was very nice visiting David Leboeuf in Strasbourg, hometown of the great chemist Charles Friedel. Great chemistry discussions and amazing hospitality. The ~300 step stairwell to climb the Strasbourg Cathedral was breathtaking, literally and figuratively.

My mini-seminar tour around Germany has ended with a very nice visit to TU Berlin TU Berlin Chemistry. Amazing hospitality by Martin Oestreich Martin Oestreich with awesome behind the scene stories about exciting chemistry developed in the Oestreich lab!

Great visit to the Justus von Liebig museum, with a special tour guide being PRS-Group himself. Amazing to hear about Liebig’s revolutionary vision in organic chemistry and agricultural science. Liebig was the one shaping up how we still do organic chemistry education today.
