Interesting stat that I found for my local cleaning business: 26% of one-time customers who booked 1 year ago (April/May 2024), booked again in the following 12 months. So only 1 out of every 4 one-time customers re-booked in 12 months. This feels wayyy too low. Some thoughts:

A travel memory I think about a lot: In 2017 I was backpacking through Romania and met a 60 year old Canadian who'd visited 157 countries. Sounds impressive, right? Until you ask him about any of them. "Serbia? Complete shithole." "Thailand? Too stinky." "Brazil? Overrated."

If you have a job that you really enjoy + make good money (I'm talking $250K+).... Don't leave to start a business. If you freakin' hate your work but are sticking with it for 'safety'... Time to look into entrepreneurship

Once a year, I cancel all my business credit cards. Then I sign up for a new ones and transfer all the subscriptions there. I ALWAYS find subscriptions we don't use anymore, and cancel them. Easily save $3,000+. Plus, bonus points for new credit card sign ups.

At the risk of making his head even bigger, Jon Matzner is a walking knowledge bomb when it comes to practical use of AI in business. Some of my franchisees were on the Sagan AI call yesterday and shared the below. @ Jon - chill, don't frame this, be cool.

For those with home services business who have high season coming up in summer: Increase your recruiting spend aggressively NOW. The worst feeling is getting a ton of leads but having 0 availability to service them.

One of my franchisees just ran a cold calling script. They simply called old one-time customers to see if they wanted to book a cleaning again. Closed ~$3,000 in sales. $0 spent on ads. Most businesses leave a lot of money on the table by not properly re-selling old customers.

Nothing makes me lose interest in a sales pitch faster than obvious scripted lines: “Would it be UNREASONABLE to say…” “How much is your time worth?” “Neel, I’m so glad you asked that, Neel.” The slicker you sound, the less I trust you. Best sales guys talk like a friend.

What people don't tell you when you're starting a home service biz: This is a low margin business in the beginning. You don't make much money until you reach the $100-200K annual revenue mark MINIMUM. Getting sales isn't the hard part. Becoming sustainable is.

Stop dreaming about franchise ownership if you can't check these boxes: A lot of people romanticize owning a franchise, but after nearly a decade in this industry, I've watched too many fail by ignoring these deal-breakers. Truth bomb: You need $500k+ net worth to play ball.

SMB Marketing Pro Tip: Secure your "tomorrow money". At the end of the service, contact the customer to check in + say "Lets get you on the calendar for your next service..." Even if only 1 of 5 people schedule, that's 20% revenue bump.

The happiest people I know work for themselves, work where they want to, and work when they want to. They usually make a good living too, but after a certain point extra cash is just extra cash, it doesn’t keep adding happiness.

I just bought a franchise. Now I just have to hire a VA, sit back, and get my passive income. Absentee business owner. Empire. Mini Berkshire. This is the life.

One of my franchisees just DMed a real estate broker from a Facebook group. Closed ~$700 in sales. $0 spent on ads. Most businesses leave a lot of money on the table by relying on solely inbound digital marketing.

Our newest franchisee just hit their "money milestone" - making their first $1 ever on their own, outside of a paycheck from a 9-5. That first $1 made running your business feels so much sweeter than the thousands which come after it.
