Cornishman gripped by a fascination of the First and Second World Wars. Endlessly reading the books and visiting the battlefields when I can. Tweeting about it.

Love the modesty that the Imperial War Museums sound archive is studded with from men of that generation. “I jumped down straight into a trench that had three jerries in it. They got their hands up before I could get mine up, so I took them prisoner”

Looks interesting, though conflicted by my love of Scotland and its virgin mountainous terrain, and the old tribal loyalty and desire to see the laurels won by those went before further commemorated. “It had to be tough”

Starting this 19 July on BBC sounds, with an episode every week: BBC Radio Ulster - Assume Nothing, SAS: The Real Blair Paddy Mayne. In-depth. Incisive. The real deal. bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00…

Incidentally I’ve just purchased Kippenberger’s memoir and given the day had a flick through the Ruweisat bit. Your grandfather and Keith Elliot are mentioned by name. Hard day for the battalion and whole brigade.

One of the more stimulating books I’ve read on the second war in a long time. Brilliant analysis of an army learning hard lessons and adapting into a scientific, battle winning organisation.

Recommend this series, currently on BBC iPlayer. The series themes have been on my mind since watching. War. Mateship. Selfishness. Selflessness. Love. Loss. Betrayal. Memory. Would also recommend the book, which as always contains greater detail! spectator.co.uk/article/the-po…

Pleased to of acquired an amazingly clear photograph of a platoon of the 8th Devons before they left shotty. Research to follow, but should imagine many met their fate on the German wire in front of Kiel trench on 25th September.

A private of the Devons killed at Morval, September 1916. Interesting how the attritional nature of the Somme reflects on individual battalions. 140 casualties in September amounts to nearly 50% of those committed, where as in July this wouldn’t even amount to a Rifle Company.

The role Comms plays in cohering component arms to fight the all arms battle is often overlooked. A nuts & bolt diagram from when the army was moving away from 1918 style creepers to artillery concentrations, pulverising defences for armour/infantry and breaking counter attacks

As a friend commented, this post is very duplicitous & almost conceited. They haven’t identified an issue, they’ve been taken to task, held to account & forced to look themselves in the mirror. They have known about it, ignored it & are now rolling out a double think narrative.

Despite my post yesterday I am very pleased to read this. Something is always better than nothing and you have to start somewhere! I really hope they can right the ship.

bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod… Recommend this. Two very interesting stories & heartening to see how much the Great War means to people. Props to BBC turning the last sequence around in 24 hours! I wish they would do more history docs of this quality!
