#OTD in 1925, severe turbulence caused the airship USS Shenandoah to crash near Caldwell, Ohio. 14 members of the crew were killed in the accident. Locals quickly looted the wreck of everything that could be carried away including the crew's personal effects.

In 1945, the escort carrier HMS Reaper (ex-USS Winjah) was allocated to the U.S. for the naval part of Operation Lusty. Lusty was the allied effort to recover top secret German aircraft. The planes shipped to New Jersey included Me 262 and Arado Ar 234 jets. #WarshipWednesday

#OTD in 1781, the French fleet defeated the British fleet in the Battle of the Chesapeake, leaving British troops under Lord Cornwallis in Virginia with no reinforcements or means of escape. A besieged Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington at Yorktown six weeks later.
