Have you ventured down to the dig yet? If not, here’s some highlights of the first few days… the team’s first find was an unfired Civil War era musket ball- not bad for Day 1! Other key finds have included a collection of pottery sherds, worked flint and chert, and a wall! (1/2)

A day of GPR survey at Bodiam in shadow of and steam . Bit of weather dodging, but a great day as archaeologists & volunteers from National Trust South East came together to undertake some important groundwork ahead of exciting potential plans.

Today we are celebrating the Cambridge Archaeology Field Group (CAFG) who have been working on the Wimpole Estate since 1989; field-walking over 500 hectares, metal detecting over 200 hectares, and excavating 72 trenches, transforming our understanding of the Wimpole countryside

Day 4 - Walls Revealed

As the final clumps of top soil from trenches 2 and 3 cleared, features emerged.
From trench 2, rubble that could have made up a wall of the square earthwork enclosure.
From trench 3, a continuation and addition of smaller walls to the wall already found.

Day 3 - Opening up

From trench 3, we've revealed a cobbled floor and a drain, which may have belonged to a courtyard of the original house!
The key find for today has been a prehistoric flint end scrapper, which, like our other finds, can be found at our finds washing station.
