Turnout for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East was 45.92 per cent

Out of a possible 75,123 in the constituency, 34,499 people turned out to vote

Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland turnout - 54.83 per cent. Out of a possible 70,331 voters across the area, 38,564 took part

We’ve also got two Middlesbrough Council bi-election counts here at Middlesbrough Sports Village. The counts for the Acklam and Central wards are expected to take place between the two parliamentary counts

Rod Liddle, SDP candidate for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland said the turnout was “low-ish”. He praised Luke Myer (Labour), describing him as “a first rate candidate” and said he would be a “great” MP, before adding: “But I think I would have done better.”

Police have spoken to independent candidate Mark Baxtrem after a razor blade fell from his flat cap. We’ve spoken to Mr Baxtrem who said he uses the blade to remove callouses on his feet. It’s now been confiscated by officers.

Labour’s Andy McDonald has been elected MP of Middlesbrough and Thornaby East

He secured 16,238 (47.2%) votes while Reform UK candidate Patrick Seargeant followed with 7,046; Conservative Kiran Fothergill - 6,174; Mehmoona Ameen, Workers Party of Britain - 2,007; Matthew Harris, Green Party - 1,522: Mo Waqas Lib Dems- 1,037, Mark Baxtrem (Ind) 383.

Mr McDonald thanked his team and voters, saying people in the country had “decided to turn a page on the Conservative misrule and misguided policies”

His victory speech continued: “Politics can transform lives and life chances. Labour has done it before and will do it again.”

Winners of the Middlesbrough Council bi-election are: Central ward Lewis Young (Labour) and Acklam ward Luke Henman (Labour)

There will be a full recount for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland as there was reportedly a difference of only 250 in the top two votes

Luke Myer (Labour) has been elected MP of Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, unseating Conservative Simon Clarke by just 214 votes

Simon Clarke congratulated Luke Myer saying it was the best job in the world and he will “always care deeply about Teesside”

The turnout was 54.83%
