We're at the MSRG spring conference today in Nottingham, on the theme of 'Bringing Disciplines Together in Medieval Settlement Studies'. And what better way to begin the day than with place-names? Our Susan Kilby is presenting on 'Knowing your place'

Really interesting to see and chat with the huge variety of people using mapped data to understand the landscape. Historical time-depth awareness is vital (as well we enriching)! English Place-Name Society Institute for Name-Studies Esri UK Hattie Gwilt

To count down to the publication of #thecuckooslea I’ll be posting a bird place-name every day between now and then. Spread the place-name love! Today, the special place that begins the book: CRANBROOK (Kent). OE cran + broc. Cranes’ brook (or possibly bog). #birdsandplace

Bird place-name of the day 2: CRACKPOT (Yorks). Norse kraka + Middle English potte. 'Crows' or ravens' gorge/rift (in the limestone)'. Love this. Great example of how modern spelling of a name can have nothing to do with original; no lunatics here! #thecuckooslea #birdsandplace

Bird place-name of the day 4: from Robert Humm & Co today we have DUFFIELD (Derbs). OE dufe + feld. 'Open land frequented by doves' (probably wood pigeon, but perhaps stock dove too--dufe was a general term for the family). #thecuckooslea #birdsandplace
