1/4 When writing my book “Tomorrow” my hope was that it might help Syrian children make some sense of the horrors they went through during the war.

The situation seems particularly bad in England which doesn’t appear to have a Live Literature scheme to fund visits. Every time a children’s author hears their publisher has just handed a massive advance to a celebrity it must feel like a slap in the face. 4/5

Meanwhile, children’s reading for pleasure levels are reducing year on year. What’s currently happening in children’s publishing clearly isn’t working, for either authors or children. 5/5

The income would enable authors, particularly those from marginalised groups, to keep writing. And publishers would gain because the children those authors inspire will become lifelong readers. Everyone wins. ❤️ 2/2

As Frank Cottrell-Boyce says in the article, the solution is in our hands. Stop closing libraries. Retain school librarians and employ many more. Fund author visits to schools. Publishers, stop throwing cash at celebrities and focus instead on engaging young readers. We can fix this.

How do we make sure all kids have the chance to fall in love with reading? They need ACCESS to a wide range of books, and FREEDOM TO CHOOSE what to read. Just give them that much, and every child can be a reader, and gain its lifelong benefits! #literacy theguardian.com/books/2024/nov…
