Some patchy fog can be expected along highway 14 and into parts of central SD early this morning.

Rain has returned to the region this evening, and the latest projections keep rain in the region well into Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon, showers may be more "hit or miss" but will be around. Amounts are not expected to be very high, and severe weather is not expected.

While severe weather is not expected, storms during the afternoon and early evening today may produce small hail and gusty winds. Patchy fog may impact early morning travel on Wednesday. Dry and warmer conditions are expected from Thursday onward.

We’ve received a few reports of weak funnels around the area. Environment this afternoon is favorable for producing weak t-storms and funnels. Any funnel clouds that develop are expected to be weak and not touch the ground. We appreciate reports and photos, but stay safe!

530 pm Update: We continue to see very light rain showers develop late this afternoon. Severe weather is not expected, but very brief and small funnels could form. These funnels generally do not pose a risk of touching down or causing damage.

Be aware that we may see areas of fog develop after midnight tonight. Potential for visibility less than 3 and 5 miles is high, with potential for dense fog also possible along in some locations.

Dense fog has develop along parts of the Missouri River early this morning. If you are in this area, please drive to conditions as visibility in this area has dropped to a quarter of a mile or less. The dense fog could expand over the next couple of hours.

The Dense Fog Advisory has been expanded further west into south central South Dakota. Remember to follow the necessary safety precautions if you encounter fog on the way to work this morning.

The environment today through this evening is favorable for producing showers and weak funnels. Any funnel clouds that develop are expected to be weak and not touch the ground. So, while these may be alarming, they generally pose no threat.

5 PM: A chance of weak cold air funnels continues through the early evening, but we also have some scattered showers moving across the area. Some lightning is possible with this activity, especially from De Smet to Howard to Corsica. This rain fades as we lose daytime heating.

7:55 PM Radar Loop | Scattered showers and t-storms will be gradually dissipating this evening, as they move south or southwest. Some of them south of I-90 will produce occassional lightning strikes and/or rumbles of thunder, but rainfall amounts will remain less than 0.10".

Patchy fog has developed in river valleys and low lying areas early this morning. If you encounter fog while on the way to work, make sure to follow the necessary safety precautions to stay safe in fog! The fog should burn off over the next couple of hours as the sun rises.

Air Quality Alerts have been issued for much of the region this weekend. Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease, asthma, or heart disease may experience health effects as the smoke gradually descends. Stay up to date with the latest info at airnow.gov .

Wildfire smoke continues to filter through the region today with an increased potential for surface impacts this afternoon. With this in mind, minor to moderate deteriorations in air quality and visibility will be possible especially west of the James River and east of I-29.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms likely return to the area by Monday afternoon ahead of a cold front. Developing thunderstorms could quickly become severe with large hail and damaging winds being the primary threats. Check out the graphic below for more details ⛈️

A few strong to severe storms are possible on Monday, with large hail up to ping pong ball in size as the primary threat, followed by damaging winds up to 65 mph. Best chances for severe weather are between 3 PM and 10 PM Monday. Have multiple ways of receiving weather alerts!

Wildfire smoke is impacting both air quality & visibility across the northern Plains this evening. Limit outdoor exertion, especially in areas where the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached unhealthy ranges. For the latest air quality observations, visit fire.airnow.gov

More wildfire smoke will progress through the region through tonight promoting periods of reduced visibility and unhealthy air quality. With this in mind, any sensitive groups should limit or post-pone outdoor activities until the smoke passes.
