Despite their cuddly appearance, American pikas are among North America's toughest animals. 🐭💪 Pikas are one of the few mammals in the lower 48 states that can survive their entire lives in alpine terrain, the windswept no-man's-land above the tree line.

YIP-YIP, that's "let's celebrate" in prairie dog 🎉 Today is International (Prairie) Dog Day. You caught us, we may have added the "prairie" but they're named for their warning calls, which sound similar to a dog's bark. Which begs the question, what would the prairie dog say?

Very demure, very mindful ✨ See how I hatched from my shell without making too much of a fuss? 🐍 Very cutesssy! Smooth greensnakes are non-venomous & feed on insects & spiders. Mothers lay 4-6 eggs between June-September & they hatch after 4-23 days. 📷 Megan Seymour/USFWS

Hop to it! 🐸 Northern leopard frogs are semi-aquatic, meaning they live both on land and in water. They prefer water for overwintering and breed in shallow pools. They feed on insects, spiders, mollusks, and crustaceans - and sometimes cannibalize smaller frogs.

Great horned owls are one of North America’s largest and most widespread owl species. 🦉 Despite its name, the great horned owl doesn’t actually have horns. Instead, it has tufts of feathers on either side of its head, which resemble horns or ears.

Work hard, play hard 🐋 Orcas are the largest members of the dolphin family and live in every ocean on Earth. Even though their common name “killer whale” implies that they are vicious creatures (and while their prey may agree), orcas are actually very playful.
