Northern Tornadoes Project Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦 will be back in Barrie on Friday July 15 for the anniversary of the tornado that struck last year. We’ll be looking into how the recovery is progressing; including flying our drone over neighbourhoods that experienced the worst damage

When I'm asked during interviews to describe the difference between a tornado & a downburst, I usually say the air with the first is 'in and up' while the second is 'down and out'. The amazing WindEEE dome at @WesternUEng, run by Girma Bitsuamlak, makes this distinction pretty clear.



My first research job was as an undergrad field assistant for ELBOW 2001. Felt so lucky to be part of that team and tried to learn as much as I could from Dave Sills (now active on Bluesky) (which continues to this day). The second annual Northern Tornadoes Project 🇨🇦 Tornado Warning Performance Assessment is now complete, with some good news. Many more tornado alerts were issued by ECCC in 2022, and scores improved - resulting a passing grade. Report card below. Full details here: uwo.ca/ntp/blog/2023/… 1/2

An NTP investigation, in collaboration with ECCC Weather Alberta, has concluded that the worst damage from the July 1st Didsbury tornado is rated EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, making it the highest-rated AB tornado since Edmonton in 1987. Full details: uwo.ca/ntp/blog/2023/…
