I was thinking about this grant application I submitted back in 2016 with The Ward Lab and Bill Schief. Project title: "Structure-based immunogen design of a pan-betacoronavirus vaccine". Impact score: 47. The weaknesses in the summary statement didn't seem valid then. Less so now.

In many different fields, outsiders overestimate the value of ideas and underestimate the difficulties of execution. So it's probably a good strategy for learning about any new field to ask "why is execution harder than it seems to outsiders?"

I can live with papers being rejected. But not when the main reason for being rejected is that did not find what we had expected. Really rather demotivating when I'm trying to train my PhD students the values of honest reporting, preregistration etc...
