On you could try wearing your socks over your trousers, where you can see them! Of course it’s much safer too, whilst riding your penny farthing! Pictured is Mr Job Hellun of Leeswood, Photographer: Holaway, Chester. (PH/33/56).

- In 1876, the village of Hawarden received a very famous guest, Alfred Tennyson, the poet laureate to Queen Victoria. A great friend of the Prime Minister, W.E. Gladstone, of Hawarden Castle, Tennyson also visited the Rectory, which is currently the home of NEWA.

In 1916, you could buy your seeds from The Stores, Treuddyn, run by E.W. & R.G. Williams. A seed catalogue offered mixed collections of vegetable seeds from 5s, including peas, beans, cabbages and carrots – for ‘a constant supply throughout the year’.

A typical day in Conservation at NEWA. Just when you thought you had your day planned out, a box full of very mouldy records comes into the Archives...

Within our Thomas Pennant collection here at NEWA, you can find his ornithology book “Genera of Birds” (London, 1781). The book provides detailed descriptions of various birds, illustrated by lovely engravings – such as this “Patagonian Pinguin”. D/DM/1494/3/27

For World Art Day we celebrate local historian, artist, and author James Bentley and his illustrated poem, “Mashin’ Days”. Written in the Buckley dialect, it details what courting was like in the early 20th century! D/JB/221

Oral health has come a long way since the 17th century, as can be seen from this teeth-cleaning recipe from c.1685! Would you be willing to swap out your regular toothpaste for a mix of “juyce of lemons…sage leafe and…faire water”? (D/E/1203)
