Attorney General, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka says the new bill to amend the Copyright & Neighbouring Rights Act, 2006 is in the offing. #PlenaryUg
The Committee on ICT has recommended that the Copyright law be amended to provide for caller ring back tones and gazette a statutory instrument under the Act to regulate the equitable sharing of revenues from caller tunes and related content-consuming platforms. #PlenaryUg
They also demanded that strict measures be imposed against broadcasters who use pirated content because it undermines the intellectual property rights of the artists hence hurting their livelihood. #PlenaryUg
The petitioners also wanted a copy levy imposed on the devices used in the reproduction of copyright-protected works to be shared equally between Gov’t and holders of copyright and neighbouring rights registered under the Act. #PlenaryUg
The petitioners want a revision of charges for call-back tunes to ensure a fairer split of the revenue collected in the percentage of 60% to be retained by the artists and 40% to be remitted and shared by both Gov’t and telecommunication companies. #PlenaryUg
