After spending 19 years in our Mountain Habitat as an unassuming rosette of leaves near the ground, one of our American columbos (Frasera caroliniensis) is about to put out a spectacular flowering stalk for the first and only time. Then it will die.

A plant with many names: eastern sweetshrub, Carolina allspice, sweet betsy, strawberry shrub, sweet bubby-bush, and of course its scientific name, Calycanthus floridus. Anyone have another one to add to the list?

Today's 80% #eclipse at the Garden. 🌘 For about an hour and a half, the sky felt dimmer and there were cooler temperatures and a strong breeze. Cardinals kept singing, and insects continued buzzing around (and sometimes getting trapped in) the carnivorous plants.
