It’s up to all of us—Black, white, everyone—no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out. It starts with self-examination and listening to those whose lives are different from our own.

“I have no idea.I don’t have an education. I’m not smart.” This is what a patient told me when I asked if he truly understood why he needed surgery. I almost teared up. It’s our job to double check that patients understand their situation. Google pictures, draw, etc. it’s crucial

For female medical & interns interested in surgery: you'll probably be told at some point that you're not strong enough, you're too feminine, you don't look like a surgeon.Every female surgeon has heard this at some point. You can do this! AMWA Doctors WomenSurgeons AOA1887

The countries that successfully re-opened schools had low Covid transmission rates, ours are skyrocketing. Kids can get very sick, we don’t know long-term effects yet. What’s more worrisome is spread to teachers/elderly. Science is not on your side. Ask any experts

Can we all stop playing the suffering Olympics? You know this game. It’s the one where everyone fights with their friends to prove they have it worse than everyone else. In a world full of suffering, no one wins this competition. Empathy, on the other hand, may help us heal.

Awesome conversation tonight about balancing wellness with a career in surgery hosted by WomenSurgeons! It came at a great time for us 3rd years who are officially declaring our specialty. I’m looking forward to my future in surgery! Thanks to all who contributed! #AWSchat

I HATE Step 1 and 2. Two antiquated exams that often serve to penalize some of the most passionate but not always the “great test takers” in med school. Why should a 3 digit score completely define an otherwise AMAZING applicant and dictate their career choice. Rant over.
