Cownose rays have a special sense called electroreception that helps them detect hidden prey—like clams—beneath the sandy seafloor. They flap their pectoral fins to kick up sediment and use suction through their gills to pull water and sand away.

Happy birthday Cali(17), Sakari(17), Maia(12), Pyp(12), and Clara(11)! All 5 of the California sea lions that call Mystic Aquarium home were rescued when they were stranded as pups. We don't know their exact birthdays, so we celebrate as a group every July 1st!

The African penguins at Mystic Aquarium eat a varied diet of sustainably caught fish and squid! When you choose to eat seafood, be like African penguins and choose locally sourced, sustainably caught fish! It’s better for the planet!

Fun fact about Maia, the California sea lion: sometimes she’s a little shy and has the quietest vocals of all the sea lions at the Aquarium. She’s still a perfect lady though!

Sea stars don’t have a brain—or even blood! Instead, they pump filtered seawater through their bodies to move nutrients around and keep their nervous system running.
