In Rome projecting signs with a skeletal framework to support neon tubes abound. This enables the signage to both stand out and commingle with the historic buildings and vistas they coexist with. The majority of tubing is small diameter that is shaped with rounded bends.

MONA acquired a piece of theme park history yesterday. The 46 year-old neon K from Knott’s Berry Farm measures 20 feet tall, weighs 5,000 pounds and is the tallest neon sign to enter MONA’s collection to date. The sign sat high atop the Sky Jump parachute ride.

Neon is serious business but the brilliant conservators and neon practitioners brought humor & sensitivity to our convening with Getty Conservation Institute this past week! We met over the course of 3 days and shared technical knowledge, philosophical & socially conscious perspectives.

For the past year we have been in conversation with the wonderful folks at Getty Conservation Institute . This month we gathered several times with GCI and conservators and neon experts throughout the world to share knowledge and recognize what a nuanced and complicated medium neon is.
