Sound on to hear a #dormouse snoring 💤 The ranger team (who are licenced to handle dormice) were out checking nesting boxes in the Teign Valley recently. This snoring dormouse was in a state of deep sleep called ‘torpor’ to conserve energy. 📷 Thanks to Ranger Luke

Our final top find discovered at #LaCotte is a flint tool about 160,000 yrs old. It appears to have been valued by its #Neanderthal owner as it was re-sharpened many times. Found alongside a bone heap, it could have been used as part of the butchery of a mammoth carcass.

It's that time of year again! Here are the prompts for #museum30 2023. As always it is a mix of standard prompts and some new additions - will you be taking part this year? bit.ly/museum-30-2023

It’s #AskAConservatorDay did you know this was first held in memory of the 1966 Florence floods which happened on the 4th November. Flood awareness is increasingly important with climate change. Ask if you need some advice on caring for wet objects

#AskAConservatorDay today. Happy to answer questions about how we care for the collections Libs and Museums &/or about being a conservator. This is an excellent tool in my arsenal against deterioration from @meacotweet

Today we turn 140! 🎉🥳 On his death Samuel Taylor Chadwick left £5000 to Bolton for “building, furnishing & maintenance of a Museum of Natural History”. Years have passed but we still have objects from this time in our collection including this penguin which joined us in 1909!

Our first curators were father & son William & Thomas Midgley. In 1907 they helped form The Bolton Field Naturalists’ Society. ✨Big news✨ Our new summer exhibition looks at the Field Nats & the #BirdsofBolton. Exciting things coming at the end of the month - watch this space!
