We now know the locations of cell types in a full mammalian brain. Our work reveals the brainstem’s absolutely stunning cellular complexity. How and why does it arise? Visit braincelldata.org to plot genes, localize types, and get markers. nature.com/articles/s4158…

How does alternative splicing regulate protein structure to enable cell-type-specific protein functions? With Matthew O’Meara, we used AlphaFold2 + scRNA-seq to investigate this question in our latest preprint. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…🧵

Sunday Essay #3 This one is perhaps a bit out there, but I hope it will trigger the start of something useful; conversations or otherwise.

Very excited to finally show off my first neuro paper that I worked on at mark cembrowski's lab over the last two years!! Had a blast mapping a brain region called the ATN at a single-cell and spatial scale - check it out :) cell.com/cell-reports/f…

Our immune system is amazing, but faces pandemics, cancer and aging. It's also wired to reject what we need to extend our healthspans & minds: organs, implants, new genes. It's time to radically augment it. We need to build an immune-computer interface (ICI). A manifesto🧵!

I'm late to the party, but this recent post by @maggie_1i is really good. A broad framework for aging that is accessible in the first pass, but full of links and ideas worth returning to. librariesforthefuture.bio/p/lff

Towards the end of the presentation I went down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to demonstrate that AF3 may still be learning to invert the convariance matrix, which is needed to extract the coevolution signal from input multiple sequence alignment (MSA) (1/9).

It was super fun exploring the world of conformal prediction and uncertainty quantification for providing robust guarantees across protein annotation tasks! Really excited to see how far we can take these methods for metagenomic mining, structural search and beyond.

How do genetic perturbations change cells? How are these effects shaped by cell type and dosage? How do we best extract insight from modern massive perturbation atlases? Im pleased to share a new preprint where we develop a suite of statistical approaches to these Qs (link below)

My favourite discovery ever has just come online. Can I please tell you about some seriously wacky molecular biology? The story starts with a reverse transcriptase that SOMEHOW defends bacteria from viruses. (👇 I recommend sound ON for the video 🎹) 1/
