The chancellor’s briefing on the spending review - required watching and studying for year 2 macro students. What parts of it can you evaluate?

UK economy potentially looking at an 11.3% fall in GDP, 2.6 million unemployed, £394bn budget deficit, and 4% Brexit related dent in GDP. Talk of an economic emergency serves only to undermine confidence. Let’s talk up the prospects with David Smith.

A current macro threat is a demand side deflationary spiral for these countries with deflation; 1) Germany 2) Italy 3) Ireland 4) Spain 5) Switzerland 6) Japan. Malaysia (-1.5%) & Singapore (-0.2%) have deflation too but due to stronger currencies reducing imported input prices

The trade war between Australia and China is intensifying and should not be ignored; fascinating and only likely to get worse with increasing tensions between the two countries. Be sure to add this to your notes, great example of protectionism and tariffs bbc.co.uk/news/business-…

An example of price discrimination but how will Easyjet keep the 2 markets separate? This could be very difficult to implement bbc.co.uk/news/business-…

I’m fond of telling my students why the 1970s were so appalling. Right here is another reason and we can use Economics to explain its negative effects. Now do you see another reason why Mrs Thatcher was important? bbc.co.uk/news/stories-5…

Do I know anyone who could tutor a boy in A Level Business in south Northamptonshire? From now to exam. Potential for online or face to face. Tutor would be the sole teacher so it’s a chunky job. Please DM me or retweet. Thank you 🙏

I’ll be honest, the cost of my recent puppy addition to the family was far higher than previous Labradors. Middle Labrador however was paid for by barter - I tutored eldest son of the family through Economics A level. That puppy was expensive!

Not a recession as defined yet but obviously not a good stat. We could focus on the summer improvement, as a long term economic health indicator but can’t ignore potential long term impacts of unemployment. UK economy shrank by 2.6% in November bbc.co.uk/news/business-…

Does anyone know what happened to rules on state aid in the Brexit agreement? I am doing competition policy and I always used to teach the outline EU laws. Thanks

This is extremely interesting. Is the premier league an example of a market that is exhibiting market failure? Has it failed? How would you use theory to describe it? Should there be government intervention and in what form? Chris Hutchinson

5 minute extension from 2 hours 35 minutes for an excellent discussion on business rates and the potential for further government intervention - sales tax, revenue, tax etc -  to support struggling retailers in the wake of the Coronavirus. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…
