A5: As a society, we compare ourselves constantly- how we look, how much $ we make, how big our house is. This makes it hard to steer parents away from comparing. No one wants their Ss on the bottom. I liked how Guskey put it as a competition agst stds, not each other #D25SBG

A6: That will come out in the narrative of the report card or conferences. With MAP, Aimsweb, F & P, we have ways to point out to parents if their Ss are exceptional and, as a 5th grade teacher, I’m not often telling parents of exceptional Ss anything they don’t know. #D25SBG

A7: I’m not sure it will. I hope previous classes would have felt a culture of encouragement & camaraderie, that we celebrated everyone’s successes & when we missed the mark, we kept trying. That no mistakes were beyond fixing. I would hope that would continue with SBG. #D25SBG

A8: Where is the motivation for Ss to complete assignments without traditional grades? Is that an issue in SBG world? How do assignments that aren’t necessarily aligned to a reporting standard fit in? If we only focus on the reporting standards, are we “gipping” our Ss? #D25SBG

Hi! I’m Lisa Schindler, 5th grade teacher at Dryden. I love the fresh start that a new school year brings, the clean slate, the new supplies, the eager faces. The anticipation of new beginnings is something most professions don’t get. #D25SBG

A1: These examples felt very familiar. Traditional grading systems fail to differentiate between these two Ss, yet they are very different. With both receiving the same grades, you’d expect them to be similar Ss, yet that is not the case at all #D25SBG #d25sbg

A2: Curriculum Night will be key in introducing this transition. The first round of conferences will be another time to talk about this transition- although the timing of conferences before report cards this year may change the direction of those conversations #D25SBG

A3: Honestly, I’m not sure. I think this is something I’ll need to talk about with my team more to ensure we’re consistent across the grade level. I’m guessing the daily reporting and grading may evolve as the year progresses. Janine Flauter 📝🍎⚡🌈☮🌌 (she/her) letters look pretty amazing! #D25SBG

A4: I was surprised how dropping the lowest scores didn’t automatically mean a higher overall grade for Ss; it actually lowered some Ss grades. Many of the scenarios sounded familiar, although the unexcused absence & cheating ones weren’t as familiar to me #D25SBG

A5:2 of 2-Study hall is no longer a stipend position in my building, so will the expectation be that teachers host Ss with incomplete work daily? Is there ever a date when incomplete work is too late? What about Ss who constantly have incompletes- how do they catch up? #D25SBG

A6: Student motivation- traditional grades are important to many of our families. Every year I have Ss who are rewarded (or punished) for their grades; how do I foster more intrinsic motivation while also being considerate of Ss who are really struggling to meet stds? #D25SBG

A7: Management and how-to make this work efficiently- not only record-keeping of standards, but managing retakes, redos and incomplete work without having a gazillion assignments outstanding that you’re trying to track down #D25SBG

A8: My biggest takeaway is a better understanding of the “why” behind SBG. I feel I now can better answer to parents why this is a good transition and why our district chose to head in this direction (and why I support it!) #D25SBG

A3: With a remote start, I think flexible and engaging are my priorities for my learning "space" Any tips for making a Zoom classroom more engaging for Ss? My costumes are limited... #D25InteractiveClass

A4: Going to be gifted with some great kids this year. Eager to get to know them with some virtual icebreakers and beginning of the year surveys. Added some Permission to Feel inspired check-ins to morning writing work, too! #D25InteractiveClass

A9: Love MrBettsClass videos for social studies with my 5th graders, but often find myself pausing to explain the content more in depth for them. Wondering if I could do something with Clips videos to add explanation for them. #D25InteractiveClass
