Languages aren’t just something you learn in school - they’re a new way of seeing the world. They connect subjects, demystify cultures, and shape how you think in everything from history to science, art to computing, music to maths. Learn a language, and you gain a tool for life.

Languages are for you if you want to make genuine connections with other people, enjoy the diversity of the world & discover life lived through a different lens. Languages may start with grammar & vocabulary, but they lead to real-life transformative experiences, linguist or not.

A career in languages might be a career in broadcasting, sport, journalism, gaming or diplomacy. It could take you to another level in scientific research, intercultural studies and geographical or archaeological work. Everyone can enjoy the multiple benefits of another language.

For me, the magic of languages isn’t just in speaking or reading them. It’s in the moment you really feel them. When a song evokes emotion, a stranger becomes a friend, or a new way of seeing the world suddenly makes sense. That’s why I learn. That’s the real power of languages.

When language learning fades away from our schools, so does something vital: the chance to step into other people's worlds, to think and feel from other people's perspectives, to understand more fully. It’s not just one subject lost. It’s thousands of human stories left untold.

Learn another language and you really see other people. You find common ground. You make human connections. You enjoy new experiences. You celebrate difference. You step out of your bubble. All your senses are heightened. Learn another language, & you're a citizen of the world.

Arabic comes to St Ambrose High! 🇦🇪 Today, some of our S3s had their first Arabic lesson, delivered by native teacher Alaa, where they learned some interesting facts about Arabic countries, basic Arabic greetings and pronunciation. So impressed by their enthusiasm! SCILT

Languages feed into every subject in school, & make every subject broader & more universally applicable. Another language is not one subject; it's a piece of every field of human knowledge. It's history, geography, maths & science through a different lens. It's transformative.

Languages aren’t a luxury. They’re how we learn to listen, experience, and see the world in all its diversity and complexity. Every student should have that opportunity. Languages are essential, because they connect us to people, stories and perspectives we can’t afford to lose.

Languages aren’t about perfection. They’re about reaching out, being understood, and understanding in return. Confuse your genders, forget your subjunctive - it doesn’t matter. You’ve already opened a door to another world. You'll fill in the gaps in time; connection comes first.
