Time to start teaching decolonisation to year 8, almost at the endgame of a year long thematic enquiry....

I'm already a huge fan of Tadashi Dozono's work, which really gets to grips with the experiences of racialiased learners in the history classroom. I'm really keen to get into this book which promises to be an important and provoking read for History teachers.

It is the the lens with which we interrogate topics with students that makes our work decolonial. Even the reign of Henry VIII can highlight hidden histories and reveal counternarratives to the dominant white, elite and male histories which are taught alongside the specification.

When I plan and teach history, I do it with the following principles in mind. Decolonial teaching is a frame of mind and and a lens with which we approach our work.

Planning CPD of decolonising the curriculum and again struck by the importance of this quote from the awesome Tadashi Dozono (2019). We must be very careful to avoid what Dozono calls 'representation through negation' when teaching sensitive histories. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
