Mostly natural history from Lakeland and further north, with the occasional foray south of Shap. Very few opinions are my own. mossfool.blogspot.co.uk

Plenty of hoverfly action on the scabious flowers CumbriaWildlifeTrust Trust's Argill Woods Reserve yesterday. Always nice to see Arctophila superbiens and Sericomyia silentis but the star of the day was Volucella inanis, which may be the first record of this species in Cumbria

Tree planting is important, but it must not destroy much rarer, valuable habitats. This wildflower-rich grassland in Cumbria has been planted without thought to the Butterfly Orchids, Betony, Scabious, Restharrow, Harebell and assoc'd biodiversity. Please RT to raise awareness!

I was surprised and delighted to see this single Marsh Fritillary at CumbriaWildlifeTrust Trust's #EycottHill Nature Reserve yesterday. The fabulous weather seems to be aiding the dispersal of this and other very localised insects

The new ponds created by CumbriaWildlifeTrust at their #EycottHill nature reserve are already being colonised by several species of dragonfly. I was pleased to find several Broad-bodied Chasers emerging the other day, still an uncommon newcomer to the Cumbrian fauna. #ClimateChange

Some bug-eyed creepy-crawlies colonising the shoreline of the new ponds at CumbriaWildlifeTrust's #EycottHill reserve back in April: the beetles Elaphrus riparius and E cupreus and the shorebug Saldula saltatoria

England #PlanningWhitePaper reforms aim to help #nature & people but will fail if not underpinned by principles. I've added my view Neil Hudson pls speak up for a #WilderFuture, good design & local democracy: The Wildlife Trusts has a Briefing here wildlifetrusts.org/sites/default/…

Completely agree with @leeinthelakes Unless the support for nature within existing protected areas is radically improved, Boris's pledge is futile. Due to their focus on recent cultural landscapes, nature is presently doing worse within National Parks and AONBs than outside them!

Nice to come across this Snow Flea whilst out for a snowy walk the other day. This one is a male, with its wings reduced to pincers with which to grasp the female.

Far from being harmless, light pollution kills up to a billion birds and 1/3 of night-time insects globally each year. Working with Cumbrian communities, we want to replace harmful lighting with eco-friendly alternatives. Help us tackle the problem today friendsofthelakedistrict.org.uk/appeal/dark-sk…

The Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) spawns in the shallows of Ullswater in winter. At this time they are vulnerable to predation by Otters and patches of scales on the shore from fish landed by Otters have been useful in plotting the spawning grounds of this vulnerable species.

Sign the petition to extend the 2026 deadline for the recording of historic footpaths & bridleways. Thousands of historic Rights of Way are not officially mapped. If not recorded by 1st January 2026, they will be closed and lost forever. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/3246…

It's time to ban neonicotinoids for good 🚫 Following a decision by the Government to allow the emergency use of #Neonics, Butterfly Conservation signed a joint letter calling for the approval to be overturned. But we need YOUR help, sign the petition. butrfli.es/NeonicsPetition

One of my favourite poos. The white, walking-stick-like droppings of the Green Woodpecker. On closer examination it is full of the fragmented exoskeltons of the ants that the bird has fed on.
