We're starting to see more ospreys at Montrose Basin now! We tend to get more regular sightings as we approach Summer. 🦅

Have you ever been lucky enough to spot an owl before? How about an owl with a hare? 😍

Thank you Alex Shepherd for sharing this video of a short-eared owl, 'video-bombed' by a brown hare in the foreground. The pair were seen at Montrose Basin last week near the Wigeon Hide.

Happy !

Curlews are one of the most noticeable wader bird, with their long curved beak and large size they are easily recognisable on grasslands, the coast or wetlands!

Spring is really in full flow now at Montrose Basin - look at all the Spring migrants that have recently arrived!

We were watching a swallow and a sand martin flying over the salt pans yesterday, and today we heard our first willow warbler of the year. 🥰

was completed Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve recently. Plots were cut at intervals in a priority area of Millburn Reedbed to restore the habitat which supports many nationally rare birds and a diverse range of invertebrates. Angus Council

Our Wildlife Watch group did lots of fun activities this morning about nests! We looked at real nests, looked at nests outside for inspiration, and then made our own chocolatey ones. 🐣🪺

Guess who is back!!? We think LM12 was waiting for that 'will he-won't he?' post before making a grand arrival this afternoon!

Resident male LM12 touched down at 16:38 for his 13th breeding season. He's wasted no time in mating with NC0 & a fish supper is sure to seal the deal!

Kingfisher in the rain. 🌧️🔭

It was quite windy yesterday, and the kingfisher was struggling to keep its balance on its various perches in front of the visitor centre at Montrose Basin.

This fantastic film footage, taken at one of our Fife reserves last month, shows a female badger moving her cub from one sett chamber to another to avoid parasites.

We've been seeing a kingfisher this rainy afternoon! It's not being seen as reliably now that breeding season is approaching, but these photos were taken on 17/03, and we saw the kingfisher on 21/03 and today too. 😍

Thank you Ralph Lowe for sharing these photos with us!

So, this happened today.
Down at the hide Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and a Little egret flushed out a Snipe.
Rubbish pic, as it was miles away at the end of the salt pans but first time I've ever caught a snipe in flight. Fair chuffed regardless.

First day of Spring!
Time to put the Winter board away and look forward to welcoming the Spring migrants - we have seen chiffchaff from the windows already and a colleague saw our first osprey yesterday over the River Southesk near the Bridge of Dun, exciting times ahead!
