Academic freedom means entrusting the pursuit of truth to a bunch of people who disagree with themselves and each other all the time...

...instead of a group of powerful people who believe they have all the answers already.

In recent news:
Premier Smith is promising to undermine academic freedom.
Premier Ford is promising to undermine the independence of Ontario’s judicial system.
These messages don’t constitute policy announcements. It’s propaganda.

Deirdre Mitchell-MacLean 1) Go through the funding;
2) Focus on projects that will enrage the base as 'wokist' or 'anti-Albertan' (contrary to O&G);
3) Publish said list & insist Albertans 'should be mad';
4) Tarnish academics as 'Trudeau funded' to try to de-legitimize their critiques (eg re: carbon $).

Lying about the intent is what’s most alarming.

Advanced Ed Minister Sawhney said the govt needs Bill 18 because “Albertans have a right to know exactly what these grants are and what they are funding”.

Yet, that’s public already. So, what’s the actual intent?

You cringe, but what I’m thinking is “thank god, some good new stupid pics up on Getty that tech reporters can use for thumbnails”

But, the more patients/inmates she shuttles into the new system, will be $$$in the pockets of her grifters running the new system she created!

I hope Smith doesn’t find out how damaging alcohol is to the family unit, healthcare, mental health, and society in general, or she might decide to do something about that, too.

If I were an academic at an Alberta university today, I’d be looking for a new job in another province or country. Having crackpot politicians decide what is acceptable research is the stuff of nightmares. #HigherEd

And in my area they’ll then put out for overtime, some right wing journalist will see that, and then say nurses are greedy assholes for working so much overtime.
