Initial jobless claims increased to 219K last week, climbing by 3K from the week prior. Unemployment claims are relatively low this year, with an avg of 213K per week. For perspective, the 2018-19 pre-pandemic avg was 219K initial claims per week.

Flows into bond funds have been positive in all but one week this year. Sharp losses in bonds negatively impacted flows in 2022, but retail investors have returned to this asset class because yields are now more attractive versus a few years ago.

Mortgage purchase applications fell 1.1%, declining for the 14th time in the last 18 weeks. Mortgage rates have hovered around 7% during this period, and inventory is slowly rising again. For sales activity to pick up, either prices or rates need to fall.

It’s been a bumpy ride for inflation since the pandemic, but the bond market is pricing in slower inflation ahead. Headline CPI inflation has remained above 3.0% for over 3 years. However, the 5- and 10-year breakeven inflation rates are both 2.3%.

It’s all about #PCE inflation this week. Expect a slowdown that increases expectations of a #Fed cut this year.

Slower CPI shelter and services inflation should begin to be felt in PCE.

Consumer confidence unexpectedly rose this month, per the Conference Board, diverging from the decline in the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index. A significant gap between current confidence and future expectations remains, although optimism rose for both.

Gas prices heading into #MemorialDay weekend are about the same as a year ago, and $1/gallon lower than 2 years ago. The national avg is $3.45/gallon, which is 11.7% of the avg hourly wage. Gas is below the 20-year avg (13.4%) on a wage adjusted basis.

Existing home sales fell 1.9% last month to an annualized pace of 4.14 million. Sales activity declined, but the median sales price rose to $407K, a rise of 5.7% Y/Y. While inventory is still low, the number of homes for sale jumped 9% in April.

Energy is the best performing sector over the last 3 years, yet the S&P 500 is still low energy. The energy sector is only 3.9% of the index. While it’s risen from a low of just 1.9% in 2020, it’s far from the peak of 16.3% in 2008.
