I'm basically an optimist, but I find it hard to argue against two claims: a) Screens/social media makes it easier to not pay attention in school b) GenAI makes it easier to cheat in school The combination of (a) + (b) is going to be a huge challenge for young ppl's education.

The 2026 U.S. National Science Foundation budget requests a ~57% decrease compared to 2024. There is a ~66% cut for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (this is where materials research is located). Cut in scholarships for students is 64.6%, for post-doctoral training - 91.4%. nature.com/articles/d4158…
