What a surprise eh? Selecting students by parental ability to pay and/or ability gives you better exam results. Who’d have thought it?!

I’ve heard this many times….. think of it that way and it changes the whole meaning and timbre of the film. Then again, I’m a sentimentalist and like my romance to be straightforward……

I have now listened to most of the key speeches at the Democrat Convention. So much to note about the style, energy, exuberance that was projected - but those qualities of rhetoric, combined with autobiographical detail, really mark out US political speech from ours in the UK.

There are a few tickets left for this discussion next Saturday with ⁦Caroline Lucas⁩. She and I first discussed the book last winter - but so much has happened since then to alter our picture of our national story. queensparkbookfestival.co.uk/products/carol…

Really enjoyed talking to ⁦Caroline Lucas⁩ about her new book on the politics of national identity at the ⁦Queenʼs Park Book Festival⁩ this weekend. We had a full house for a spirited political discussion.

'Israel tries to present itself as the only representation of Jewishness.... I'm Jewish, but I don't want to be represented by Israel... These two things are separate.' Thank you Michael Barenboim for speaking out against Israel's crimes at this time.

So good to spend the day with this terrific bunch of education thinkers at The Centre for Young Lives. Chairing Headteachers’ Roundtable has been one of the highlights of my career. We are influencers who have genuinely had real influence.

I'm in a bar in France & next to me is a group of nine friends in their early-20s, each one of whom has been doubled up in tears of laughter for the last 10 minutes at something one of them said. Everyone in the bar is laughing with them without knowing why & it's just fantastic.

The rerun of Peter Kominsky’s absorbing two-part drama The Project ( broadcast on BBC 4 tonight) illuminates just how little has changed re Labour’s discussions with itself - and the nation - over nearly three decades. Extraordinary, the way the same themes recur and resonate.

Strong performance by Diane Abbott on BBC Newsnight tonight. Not enough proper discussion of her treatment as part of the leadership’s purge of distinct sections of the left.
