In 1944, Stevens was assigned to the 557th Bomb Squadron, 387th Bomb Group, Ninth U.S. Air Force, in the European Theater of Operations. 2/🧵

On December 23rd, Stevens was a gunner aboard a B-26F “Marauder” aircraft, nicknamed “Shirley D”, which was shot by anti-aircraft fire while returning from a bombing raid. 3/🧵

A witness reported that “Shirley D” took damage to the right engine, resulting in a massive fire. 4 crewman bailed out, while 3 remained onboard as it crashed into Belgian soil. 4/🧵

A few days later, the AGRS was able to identify and account for 2 of the crewman who had remained onboard, but it wasn’t until over 75 years later, after an archaeological dig in the hot summer heat, that the final crewmember would be accounted for. 5/🧵

We are honored to announce that our latest case in partnership with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is now closed, and SSgt Stevens has been accounted for. A painting was created of the last moments of the “Shirley D” on 23 Dec 1944. We believe it was commissioned by a family member of one of the crew, but a copy was purchased and hangs in our offices at UW–Madison Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA)

Today we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, doubly appropriate to remember Lt. Frank Fazekas, our first archaeological recovery. He was shot down over #France OTD in 1944 flying a P-47 near Saint-Omer. He is now in Arlington National Cemetery ABMC Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) UW–Madison

Question Dr Zack White: Just listened to episode from 2020 on the unknown remains from Burgos. Any update on where things stand today? Interested, as our group UW Missing in Action Recovery & Identification (from UW–Madison) does similar work for Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) on more modern cases, but curious if DNA analysis was done?
