We have a new postdoctoral fellowship available to study the response of tropical forests to climate, and the associated physiological mechanisms underlying growth and survival. Awesome field sites throughout the tropics. If interested, check out pnnl.jobs/richland-wa/po…

Nice one from Alex Pivovaroff--homeostatic traits across a Panamanian climate gradient, but strong role of hydraulics on species moisture dependencies. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bt…

Wow...global estimates (sattelite driven) of increasing water stress impacts on growth, with progressive increases in drought sensitivity and shrinking on non-drought impacted areas.

New one from down-under: a look at the potentially critical role of CO2 in mitigating drought and rising vapor pressure deficit impacts on plants. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

A useful statistical approah for all of us that measure water potentials to quantify drought impacts on plants. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/np…

New one led by Hongxia Zhang examining hydraulic function conifers dying from seawater exposure. Nice results and compelling interpretation...upland trees do not like novel seawater exposure!

Clever one led by Rutuja Chitra-Tarak suggesting a relationship between rooting depth and hydraulic resistance to embolism in the tropics. Very nice!

More bad news for SW USA pines from the Sevilleta drought experiment. Trees turning brown, super low water potentials, insects abound...but it did rain a tad bit this week so lets see...

Nice...this is what happens to the trees after they die. These are critical numbers for understanding the carbon consequences of tree mortality.

A new one led by Alex Pivovaroff demonstrating that increasing rooting depth may allow tropical trees to withstand drought. A nice integration of data and modeling.

All, a great new postdoc position working with myself and a broad group of scientists. Options include ecosystem ecology, tree physiology, and a great option available to the candidate is studying how coastal forest trees die! This will be a fun project!

So stoked about this new experiment. Instead of droughting trees to death as we've done for decades, this time we are adding seawater to understand the impacts of elevated salinity on tree mortality. Very different, yet with strong physiological similarities during mortality!

Check out this online seminar for the latest ideas on drought-induced tree mortality, by Tansley Medal winner Anna Trugman. Should be great! newphytologist.org/events/now/npn…

Note we are open to empiricists or modelers for these postdoc and technician positions on plant physiological ecology responses to elevated CO2 and temperature.
